May on the Farm

Spring brings fresh energy to Carpe Diem Farms as the herd steps into a new season of training and connection.

We blinked and now it’s May! I don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly enjoyed the April showers, though not our usual, still enough to bring us magnificent May flowers.

The farm comes alive as spring moves into summer. The horses begin their refresher courses in groundwork. Violet and Kaleb will be “back in the saddle” and the primary teachers.

“Journey,” the Shire, who just turned five on April 16, has begun his groundwork training. At last measurement he is now 18 hands two inches. That’s 74 inches at the withers. Nearly six-foot-two inches at his back! He can continue to grow until he is seven years old. When it comes time to ride him, I’m going to need a very tall mounting block! I haven’t been able to find a weight tape big enough to measure his current weight. I’m guessing that he is 1,700 to 1,800 pounds!

He is a remarkable creature, has no concept that he is so large and can most of the time be seen grazing in the pasture with his friend, “Pumpkin,” our 34-year-old mini who comes up to his knee! Size differences are not a “thing” in this herd!

Programming will begin when school dismisses for the summer. I took a fall a few months back, fractured my knee and pinched a nerve in my shoulder and neck. I’ve taken the winter to rest and restore.

Thankfully, I have a wonderful crew who have stepped up and relieved me of the daily physical labor.  Chad Garner, Rolfing therapist extraordinaire whom I see weekly for sessions, together with PEMP and red-light therapy have me back on track to get me back in the saddle this month.

We look forward to seeing you on the farm! If you’d like to make an appointment to meet the herd, take a tour of the farm or interact with the horses, call (828) 526-2854.. Seize the Day!
