Over a year ago, Summit Charter School began an ambitious, student-initiated effort to revitalize the athletic field. What started as a vision to improve safety, accessibility, and the student-athlete experience has quickly become something much larger: a renewed gathering place for the school and community.

This spring, the impact of those improvements was on full display. Summit’s Varsity Girls Soccer team completed an undefeated regular season, became Regional Champions of the West, and advanced to the NCHSAA 1A State Championship Game — the first athletic team from Southern Jackson County to ever reach a State Title Game. Along the way, Summit hosted three state playoff matches on the home field, creating unforgettable experiences for players, students, families, and fans.

The timing could not have been more meaningful. New bleachers, an expanded field, and an upgraded scoreboard helped create an atmosphere worthy of the historic moment. More importantly, these improvements fostered school spirit, community pride, and opportunities for students to compete at the highest level close to home. All enhancements have been made possible through the generosity of Summit families, community members, and supporters who believe in the power of athletics to enrich the student experience.

The work continues this summer. Planned enhancements include a press box, field lighting, fencing and netting, irrigation and drainage improvements, expanded field dimensions, team benches, flagpoles, landscaping, and beautified walkway access. Sights are also set on completing a practice field behind the new middle school building, allowing the growing athletic program to conduct practices entirely on campus.

As Summit prepares to celebrate its 30th year of educating students, the field revitalization project reflects the same spirit that has defined the school since its founding: investing in opportunities that help students discover their potential and strengthen the community around them.

The success of Summit’s student-athletes this year reminds us what can happen when a community comes together to support its younger generations. Summit Field is becoming more than an athletic venue – it is becoming a place where memories are made, traditions are built, and the next generation of Bears can dream big.
