If you’re looking for a unique set of waterfalls while visiting Lake Toxaway, these two should definitely be on your list. From the Panthertown Cafe in Toxaway, take Hwy 64 E towards Brevard for 8 miles to Headwaters Outfitters at the intersection of NC Hwy 215.
Headwaters Outfitters is a great stop for any gear you may need, and generally has one or two food trucks on site for food and beverages. This location has been a local landmark for over 30 years, and is also featured as a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Adventure for 10 years in a row.
A couple of their most popular options in September and October are their “Self Guided Canoeing and Kayaking River Trips” and “Guided Trout Float Trips” with full-day and half-day options available, depending on the time of year and river conditions. Once you’re all set (keep in mind there are no restrooms at the waterfalls), take a left onto NC Hwy 215, towards Balsam Grove. This is one of the most scenic stretches of the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway.
The route connects US-64 near Rosman with the Blue Ridge Parkway at Beech Gap. Although the drive includes plenty of curves, it is considered one of Western North Carolina’s most rewarding scenic road trips. Please be cautious around blind curves, as this route is also used by bicyclists testing their endurance and strength.
Almost eight miles up the hill on the left, slow down and look for Living Waters Ministry. Just before their driveway, park in the gravel parking area to the left.
The trailhead begins in the treeline and starts with stone stairs heading down towards the river, with the waterfalls in view immediately. These falls are the French Broad Falls, and also known as Mill Shoals Falls. The twin waterfalls cascade approximately 15 feet beneath an iconic bright-red former mill, creating a unique setting for photographers.
The beautifully restored mill is now home to Living Waters Ministry, a Christian retreat. The organization graciously allows public access to the property, giving visitors the opportunity to experience this remarkable location. The peaceful environment, large riverside rocks, and shaded picnic areas make this an excellent place to relax and enjoy lunch while listening to the sound of rushing water.
Because the waterfalls are located on private property, guests are encouraged to respect the land by staying on designated paths, packing out all trash, and leaving the area as they found it. Although tempting, swimming is not allowed.
For those wanting to explore a little farther, turn back towards the stone stairs, then continue downstream to Bird Rock Falls, also known as Cathedral Falls.
The hike down is not very difficult, however the boardwalks and approach to the waterfalls can be slick when wet. Your destination is approximately one-quarter mile ahead, and is somewhat a hidden treasure. At the first rock overlook, follow the handrail to the left, hugging the side of the hill. Then, at the “cave,” turn right towards the river.
The trail follows a gently rolling forest path with a steady, manageable grade suitable for most hikers in reasonable physical condition. Sturdy hiking shoes are strongly recommended, and visitors should use extra caution around the water, especially on moss covered smooth surfaces. Tucked into a peaceful woodland setting, this picturesque waterfall is surrounded by towering rock bluffs that create a dramatic natural amphitheater. The impressive rock face and tranquil atmosphere make it well worth the short hike downstream.
