This lecture will focus on Thomas Dorsey, the Father of African American Gospel music and a celebrated blues pianist. He moved to Chicago and began writing gospel hymns, the most famous being “Precious Lord, Take my Hand,” after the death of his wife and infant daughter in childbirth. Presenter: Ethnomusicologist Oliver N. Greene, Jr., received his Ph.D. from Florida State University. He is Associate Professor of Music at Georgia State University, teaches courses on world music, popular American music and carnival traditions. His documentary film Play, Jankunu Play: The Garifuna Wanaragua Ritual of Belize (2006) has been shown at universities, cultural art affairs and international conferences and film festivals.
