Description

The city of Potosi, located high in the Andes of southwestern Bolivia, played an essential role in world history from the 16th through early 19th centuries. Situated some 13,500 feet above sea level, it was founded in 1545 at the base of Cerro Rico, the site of the world’s largest silver deposit. For centuries its riches funded the Spanish Monarchy. In the late 16th and 17th centuries, Potosi became the largest city in the Western Hemisphere, with a population of 200,000 and the wealthiest city in the world. Its rich mines paid for magnificent churches as well as public buildings and private homes, many of which have been carefully preserved. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Potosi remains one of South America’s greatest jewels. This richly

illustrated photo journey will display the wonders of this remote and historic city.
