The medieval crusades remain a subject of intense debate. Were these events, from the eleventh through the fourteenth centuries, moments of profound faith, or were they opportunistic land grabs by European elites conducted under the pretense of holy wars? This lecture begins with an overview of the medieval crusades in Europe and the Holy Lands. We will then consider the controversial modern legacy of the Crusades, frequently evoked in modern politics and media. The legacy of the Crusades lingers as one of history’s great questions. Presenter: Vicki Szabo received her Ph.D. from Cornell University in Medieval Studies, in the fields of Archaeology and History. She has served on the faculty at Western Carolina University since 2001, offering courses in Ancient Greek and Roman history, early Christianity, the Early and High Middle Ages and Environmental History.
