Eczema and Winter Itch

Severely dry skin during the winter months is a common problem in our area. Lower humidity caused by cold weather and indoor heating is one of the main culprits. Other factors that can cause excessive dryness of the skin include hot baths or showers, swimming pools, hot tubs and harsh soaps.
When the skin becomes excessively dry small cracks can develop in the surface which damages the moisture barrier function of the skin. The end result is dry skin eczema, which can be extremely itchy and bothersome.
Treatment for dry skin eczema includes avoidance of irritants and very hot water. I recommend lukewarm water when bathing, and mild unscented soap or cleanser. Don’t stay in the shower or tub longer than five minutes, pat your skin dry, apply a good moisturizer while the skin is still damp. Try to avoid strong fragrance and use an unscented moisturizer such as CeraVe or Cetaphil.
Using a humidifier in the home to increase the relative humidity may help with dry skin eczema. Additional consideration should be given to clothing that touches the skin. Plain cotton fabrics seem to be less irritating to the skin. Wearing a cotton base layer under a wool sweater can minimize irritation.
Over the counter anti itch creams such as one percent hydrocortisone or CeraVe “itch relief moisturizing lotion” may also alleviate symptoms of dry skin eczema. If this does not help, see your doctor or dermatologist, who may recommend a prescription strength topical steroid cream or ointment. Cases unresponsive to conventional therapy may require a biopsy to rule out a
more serious condition.
