November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month. CarePartners Hospice (a Mission Health affiliate) is now available in Highlands. The mission of CarePartners Hospice is to make the patient comfortable, and keep them alert and pain-free so that they may live in dignity, with a sense of serenity, while being surrounded by family, friends and caring, respectful professionals.
One of those professionals is Vic Greene. Vic works with the chaplaincy services and comes to the Eckerd Living Center every week. A North Carolina native, his father was a Baptist minister, and Vic followed in his footsteps. Vic was introduced to hospice care working as the college chaplain at Furman University, where he started a monthly support group and soon became a hospital chaplain.
In Macon County, CarePartners offers both men’s and women’s bereavement groups at Eckerd Living Center.
“These are safe and confidential places where members work together to support one another,” said Vic. “Grief is experienced in so many ways, physical, emotional and spiritual. Being with other grieving people can reaffirm that you are not alone.”
CarePartners uses the team approach, which includes Vic, a medical director, a clinical coordinator, three full-time RNs, a social worker and a volunteer coordinator. They serve all of Macon County. While the vast majority of patients stay at home, Vic sees patients in facilities, too.
