An impressive group of spokespeople representing Macon County recently addressed the Rotary Club of Highlands about the need for capital improvements at Highlands and Franklin Schools on November 29.
Philanthropy was on full display at last week’s meeting of the Rotary Club of Highlands! The Club awarded funds to help the Community Care Clinic, The Counseling Center of Highlands, NC, The Bascom, A Center for the Visual Arts, and the Highlands Food Pantry. Those donations, which come out of our Rotary Charities Fund amounted to $3,500 and are intended to help these vital programs continue their work and their contributions to our community. In a combined effort with The Mountain Top Rotary, our hot dog giveaway at the Highlands Halloween Street event collected $2,555 through donations which we, the 2 clubs turned around and donated again to the Food Pantry for the work they do to help feed folks of our community who need it! And finally, a gift of financial support was given by The Rotary Club of Highlands to help one of our own. Kevin Franklin, the husband of our member Tracy Franklin was stricken with a rare neurological disease, Guillain-Barre Syndrome. In the case of this syndrome, someone who has contracted it can go from being totally normal to full paralysis in days. While Kevin is making great progress in his recovery, he will be away from his work for quite some time and will suffer a great loss of income. Our club is proud to have been able to donate in excess of $5300 to help the Franklins to get through this very tough time. Our Rotary is there when there is a need.
The Rotary Club of Highlands welcomed another new member at our meeting Tuesday, and he is Codie Couch. Codie is a Manager at Tate Landscaping and has been here in Highlands for five years and is looking forward to being a part of Rotary.. Welcome to the club Codie!
The Rotary Club of Highlands welcomed Tiffany Ervin, self-proclaimed “Rotary Geek”, to the meeting held on November 22. Ervin discussed the Rotary CART Fund (Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust) which collects and provide dollars for leading edge research for the cure/= and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. It started in 1996 with Rotarians voluntarily emptying their pockets and purses of change at weekly meetings. CART is a Rotary-initiated project that illustrates the amazing power of Rotary. By providing grants to researchers in the early and conceptual stages of a line of research, CART enables its grant recipients to explore approaches to arresting or curing Alzheimer’s Disease that may be outside the mainstream ideas being pursued by big pharmaceutical companies.
Highlands Cashiers Health Foundation (HCHF) has awarded Four Seasons, The Care You Trust a grant to support the purchase of a mobile medical vehicle and SIM mannequin. This equipment will enhance the education and training for staff, ultimately affecting the care provided to patients served in the Highlands and Cashiers area. Four Seasons will also be able to provide care to more rural patients throughout the western region.
Hudson Library, in partnership with VAYA Health, is hosting an educational series on adult mental health, held on the second Tuesday of each month. This series is intended especially for older adults, but may be of interest to any adult. The December 13 program, held at 2 PM, is titled Enhancing Mental Health with Alternative Treatments: Animal Assisted Therapy & Laughter.
This program is intended for both care providers and recipients. It looks at alternative treatments and practices and their impact on mental health. Many of the “outside of the box” interventions can be incorporated into the lives of people managing a mental illness and/or their caregivers to help create balance, stability and a reduction in stress.

Each month, The Rotary Club of Highlands recognizes and salutes the students at The Highlands School for their achievements and what they bring to their classes. This month’s students are Sklar Felshaw, elementary school recipient, Aubrie Potts, middle school recipient, and senior recipient Anna Stiehler.
Dr. Steve Hinkey and Beata Gola are pleased to announce that Invocative Fine Art will open its doors on Friday, November 25th. The contemporary fine art gallery at 521 N. 4th Street, Highlands NC will be open throughout the weekend for holiday shopping. IFA is dedicated to brilliantly beautiful art in all forms – paintings, mixed media, digital art, and sculpture, with plenty of abstract, nature, and soul-stirring art. The gallery is located in front of Mountain Findings, across from Historic Village.
Representing fine artists from across the country, they hope to appeal to art enthusiasts looking for new and exciting art for their homes and offices, and to interior designers and architects seeking finishing touches, or art pieces to build around. They also work with clients and designers on special projects and oversee commissions. The gallery features paintings and sculptures from established international fine artists Harry James Moody, Michael Hayden, Luis Sanchez, Clara Berta, Yari Ostovany, Suzan Obermeyer, Ann DerGara, Florencia Clement de Grandprey, Charles Sherman, and Dr Steve Hinkey.

The Rotary Club of Highlands was proud to have retiring Macon County Commission Chairman Jimmy Tate as our speaker last Tuesday. Jimmy and his family have a history that goes back 6 generations in the Goldmine Community of Highlands. A graduate of UGA in Landscape Architecture, Jimmy believes the best thing he got out of the University of Georgia was meeting his wonderful wife, Allison. Jimmy started Tate Landscaping in 2002. He served 11 years on the Macon County Commission, 8 of those years serving as Chairman which is the longest period of chairmanship of anyone ever in Macon County. Jimmy shared many of his accomplishments, way too many to list here, but suffice to say the importance of what he did on the Commission and as Chairman will be felt for years to come! Jimmy’s service to Highlands and all of Macon County is highly documented, and his absence on the commission will surely be felt.
