This year, the Highlands Nature Center has continued bringing the wonders of the natural world directly to local children through our outreach initiative, Nature on the Go!
Designed to connect young learners with nature wherever they are, this program allows our Education Specialists to visit schools, preschools, and community organizations across the Plateau with engaging, hands-on lessons about the environment.
So far in 2025, our team has partnered with eight community organizations, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Highlands and Cashiers, the Literacy & Learning Center, the Gordon Center Preschool and Afterschool Program, and the Highlands Community Child Development Center, to share outreach programs reaching hundreds of participants during the spring and fall months.
Each month, Nature on the Go! highlights a new theme designed to spark curiosity and encourage exploration. This year’s topics have included Snakes, Acorns and Animals, and Moths and Butterflies. From observing snake scales up close to learning how acorns help forest wildlife thrive, children have the chance to see, touch, and discover nature in exciting new ways.
This important work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our community. In 2025, Cullasaja Women’s Outreach, the Highlands Community Fund, and The Church of the Good Shepherd provided vital grant funding that helps us bring high-quality, accessible environmental education to children across the Plateau. Their generosity ensures that young learners of all backgrounds have opportunities to connect with nature, foster curiosity, and grow into future stewards of our environment.
Through Nature on the Go!, the Highlands Biological Foundation supports the Nature Center’s mission to make environmental education accessible to everyone in our community. By meeting children where they are, we are helping the next generation of naturalists form meaningful connections with the world around them, one visit at a time.
