The Chunk And Run

Many golfers don’t realize how easy the 60-100-foot bunker shot really is.

Normally they try to be very precise and strike the sand right at the ball instead of a couple of inches behind the ball as in a normal bunker shot.

The margin of error is very small.  If you’re using a sand wedge and hit too far behind the ball it’ll be short and may not even get out of the bunker.  If you happen to hit the ball first…everyone better duck!

The easy way to hit the long bunker shot is quite easy and like me you do it a lot. Just hit it fat with the right club.

The Chunk-and-Run is a very popular shot with good players and touring professionals because it’s a foolproof way to lessen the pressure on a shot that lots of golfers have no idea how to play.

Here are simple steps that’ll make all the difference in your game:

1. Leave your Sand Wedge in the bag.  Use a Pitching Wedge or even an 8- or 9-Iron.

2. Open the face just slightly.

3. Use a half backswing and aim for a spot about four or five inches behind the ball.  Keep the follow through short as well.

4. Don’t try to be cute and slide the club under the ball.  Hit way behind it and just push a bunch of sand toward the target with the ball in front of the sand. 

5. The ball will pop out with no spin and with a lot of roll.

It may sound weird to not use a Sand Wedge, but I assure you it works.  Give it a try and you’ll be amazed at how easy the chunk and run is.
