Buck’s Coffee Café in Cashiers has long been the real-deal spot to grab a cup of coffee, catch up with neighbors, or simply loll away the afternoon. Walk inside, and it’s as if the café itself exhales—a slow, easy warmth settling in around you, the kind that makes you want to pull up a chair and stay a while.
The cafe has always been a gathering place and the Miskews, owners since October 2021, want to ensure it’s also a showcase for regional artists and local makers who are drawn to the magic of the mountains.
Dawne Raulet, daughter of Buck’s founders Tommy and Linda Clark, has been a beloved part of the Buck’s DNA for years. Her mixed-media paintings – textured, raw, and full of movement – are part of the café’s soul.
Now, she’s joined by local favorite Ali Leja, whose contemporary pieces add a bold contrast, shifting the mood from one side of the room to the other.
Even the mugs tell a story. Highlands Mayor Pat Taylor — better known around here as a master potter – crafts Buck’s signature coffee cups, the kind you wrap your hands around on a cold morning.
And for those who like a little honey in their tea (or straight from the spoon, no judgment), Rose Mary Achey of Calm Creek Farm provides raw honey and golden honeycomb so pure it practically glows in the light.
Of course, coffee without a great pastry is like a book with missing pages. After years of searching for the right post-covid bakery partners, Buck’s found them in local favorites Charlie’s Hot Buns and Backwoods Bakery. Now, the menu includes oversized cinnamon rolls dripping with honey-orange glaze that melts luxuriously into every fold and croissants with crisp, golden layers that shatter at the first bite – impossibly good companions to that perfect cup of coffee.
At Buck’s, the coffee –from a roaster in nearby Americus, Georgia – may be what gets people in the door, but it’s the craft – the art on the walls, the mugs in their hands, the honey on their toast, the pastry crumbs left behind – that makes them linger.
