A Day in the Orchard

On Saturday, April 18, from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., the Cashiers Historical Society invites the community to celebrate mountain traditions with cider pressing, crafts, music, and hands‑on history at its 19th Annual Heritage Apple Day.

A gentle mountain breeze, the scent of woodsmoke, and the unmistakable sweetness of freshpressed cider will greet visitors on Saturday, April 18, when the Cashiers Historical Society hosts its 19th Annual Heritage Apple Day, a celebration that feels as timeless as the orchards that once quilted the Cashiers Valley.

From 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., the five-acre CHS campus at 1940 Highway 107 South will come alive with music, hands-on learning, and the warm, communal spirit that has always defined life on the Plateau.

Heritage Apple Day is one of those rare events that manages to be both deeply educational and wonderfully playful. Rooted in the traditions of the early settlers who relied on hardy mountain apple varieties for food, drink, and fellowship, the day invites guests of all ages to step into that history – quite literally – through the Society’s own apple orchard. Visitors can learn the art of grafting and, for the first 100 guests, take home a grafted tree of their own. It’s a gift that grows, a living reminder of the region’s agricultural past and the community’s commitment to preserving it.

Across the grounds, families will find apple crafts, fresh-pressed cider, demonstrations, and the kind of informal storytelling that happens naturally when neighbors gather under open sky. Live music drifts across the campus, picnic blankets dot the lawn, and children wander the nature trails with cups of cider in hand. Guests are encouraged to pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it – there’s plenty of room to spread out, explore, and savor the springtime beauty of the CHS property.

This year’s celebration carries an added layer of significance as the Society joins communities across the nation in marking America’s 250th birthday. Two North Carolina America 250 exhibits will be on display, including When We Became Us, open April 7 through May 30. The pairing feels fitting: the story of America is, in many ways, the story of its orchards – of cultivation, resilience, and the shared labor of building something meant to last.

As always, the event is free and open to the public, a reflection of the Cashiers Historical Society’s mission to preserve the history and heritage of the Cashiers Valley through stewardship, advocacy, and education. Whether you come for the crafts, the music, the history, or simply the joy of biting into a crisp mountain apple, Heritage Apple Day offers a chance to reconnect with the land and the community, and with the stories that continue to shape this place we call home.
