June has arrived, and the Highlands-Cashiers Center for Life Enrichment is ready to launch your summer with a vibrant lineup of enrichment opportunities. From celebrating the Semiquincentennial of the signing of the Declaration of Independence to diving into the rich world of craft cacao, CLE has something for everyone this month!

Rick Kistner
Back by popular demand this month is the ever-animated Rick Kistner, who will bring history alive with his two slated lectures. His first talk on June 15, “The Founding Mothers,” will kick off CLE’s “1776 Series” – a celebration of the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Kistner will shed light on the women whose contributions were critical in shaping America’s destiny in the struggle for independence.

Tracy Foor
Then, on June 16, Kistner will shift gears and present “J. Edgar Hoover: The Man Behind the Mask.” Together, participants and Kistner will dive into and examine the life, scandal, and mystery of one of the most controversial figures in American history.

J. Edgar Hoover
What fun would a season on the Plateau be without a “note” of local history too? On June 17, Highlands Historical Society’s past President, Tracy Foor, will present on the “Roots and Rhythms of Mountain Music.” Mountain Music, also known as Old Time Music, is often written off as simple, “hillbilly,” or unsophisticated. Its cultural roots, however, run much deeper than its rustic image. Foor will explore the cultural foundations of the genre, as well as the influence of Old Time Music on Bluegrass. Foor will also examine where Bluegrass diverges from traditional Mountain Music, and how the genre and tradition is carried on with music today.

For the folks who want to roll up their sleeves and stir up some trouble, Melody Germain of La La Land Organics will lead “The Art of Craft Chocolate Making: A Hands-On Workshop” on June 25. Participants will have the delicious opportunity to craft artisanal chocolate creations with a variety of natural and superfood ingredients. Then, Germain will guide her budding chocolatiers through the process of infusing their creations with fillings, spices, herbs, and even rose petals, to create unique and luxurious flavor profiles. This is one “sweet” experience you won’t want to miss out on!
