Our mountain winters present their own special seasonal opportunities and pleasures. Winter beauty abounds. Our crystalline blue sky — Carolina Blue — contrasts with the woody brown ground of the season.
We gather around our fireplaces in winter, a deeply human activity. We wear our wools and plaids, don our tweed hats and herringbone coats. Ladies, where are your Pendletons? Men can wear scarves in the winter; women have knitted hats and sweaters that are high fashion. With their stylish coats, they become images from Vogue magazine. Our winter beauty often includes us in the tableau.
If it snows, our world becomes a winter wonderland, full of enchantment and magic. An eight-inch snow covers a multitude of imperfections here on Earth and has a calming effect. Could winter snow be Source reminding us of Original Innocence and Grace?
December brings more than Christmas, although that holiday inaugurates the whole season—full of goodwill, family, feasts, fond remembrances, and new stories. Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas from all of us at The Laurel Magazine.
Also in December, in staccato fashion, are:
International Human Rights Day – December 10
Bill of Rights Day – December 15
Hanukkah – Begins December 15
Winter Solstice – December 21
Christmas Day – December 25
Kwanzaa – Begins December 26
To celebrate winter is to glory in the possibilities. We could join excited children in their pajamas riding the Polar Express out of Dillsboro, glory in the festive lights that decorate our downtowns and parks, feel Cupid’s arrow piercing our hearts with love and goodwill to all.
Think about a cup of steaming hot buttered cider. These and more are the gifts of the season.
Glory be.
