Friendship often begins with shared experiences — and for Cashiers yogi Mary Abranyi and Sonoma winemaker Guy Davis, those experiences began right here on the Highlands‑Cashiers Plateau. Over dinners at wine events and local festivals, Mary and her husband Steve came to know Guy, discovering a mutual love for yoga, wine, and a deep sense of place. Mary recalls, “As I began to learn more about Guy’s wine, I found that I wouldn’t have allergic reactions that I often do with other wines.” That discovery deepened her appreciation and trust in Davis Family wines, and over time, conversations grew into a lasting friendship through yoga. Today, that bond has blossomed into a one‑of‑a‑kind collaboration: Fusion’s Sonoma Wine Country Yoga & Wellness Retreat, unfolding May 11-17. Guy notes how the idea of combining yoga and wine into a retreat kept resurfacing in their conversations. “We began dreaming of this long ago, and though the pandemic paused our plans, now the timing feels right.”

Mary has long noticed that guests at her retreats seek balance — yoga by day, wine by night. “Not everyone drinks, but for those who do, one of the first questions when booking has been if they will be able to have wine,” she explains. “So I thought it would be a great experience to see firsthand where the wine starts on the vine and in the vineyard. Touring the winery offers a glimpse into the transition from earth to bottle, creating a greater appreciation and sense of awareness.”

Guy envisions two distinct yoga experiences at Davis Family Vineyards. The first unfolds at his Soul Patch Vineyard, perched high on a ridge above the Russian River Valley and the Mayacamas Mountains, where the east‑facing slope greets each morning with a spectacular sunrise, a setting that invites stillness and spaciousness. The second takes place indoors at the winery, where guests will practice among oak barrels and savor the rare opportunity to taste wine directly from its source.

But the retreat extends far beyond the vineyard. It’s designed as a showcase of Sonoma County’s beauty, blending wellness, adventure, and culinary experiences. Guests will enjoy six nights of stylish accommodations at Mountcrest Ranch, a secluded 85‑acre property in Bennett Valley. Each day includes yoga and meditation, complemented by farm‑to‑table meals prepared by private chefs and local restaurants. The itinerary includes the two exclusive Yoga and Wine experiences at Davis Family Vineyards, a guided hike through Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, your choice of horseback riding with spectacular views of the Sonoma Coast or keep your feet on the ground with a scenic hiking tour, and a restorative spa day at Osmosis Day Spa Sanctuary. Along the way, participants will explore Healdsburg’s charming square, visit Bodega Bay, and take in breathtaking coastal viewpoints.

This rich itinerary reflects Guy’s excitement to showcase Sonoma’s diversity. “Napa Valley is beautiful, but Sonoma has a different rhythm,” he explains. “It’s not just vineyards — there are pastures, cows, and the Pacific Ocean shaping the climate. The coastline is rugged and dynamic, unlike anywhere else.” He also sees a kinship with Highlands–Cashiers. “The weather patterns in the mountains remind me of Sonoma. The elevation cools the air in similar ways to the ocean breezes there. Both places are special, and I love showing people how they connect.”

Mary views the retreat as a holistic journey of body, mind, and community. “On the mat, we find community with ourselves, which is often lost these days to busy schedules and commitments to others,” she reflects. “When eating and filling our bodies with delicious, healthy food, we gather and find appreciation for the moment, for the food, and for the company. As we explore the forests and the vineyards, we’re reminded that the earth can provide beauty and abundance for our community and many communities. And when we slow down and embrace massage and other wellness therapies, we remember that self‑care can help us show up with more presence — so when we step back into our daily lives, we can do so refreshed and more available.”

For Mary, this integration is what she calls fusion. “Fusion to me is a conscious blend of community and well‑being. Yoga itself means union, and this retreat embodies that, blending practices, places, and people into one. My wish is that participants carry this spirit home with them, taking more time to savor the moments, on the mat and off, that make them feel stronger, more alive, and more connected.”

Together, Mary and Guy invite participants to embrace this union of yoga and wine, of inner stillness and outer adventure, of personal reflection and shared joy.
