The Cashiers Historical Society got its start back in 1996, when a small group of locals recognized how important it was to preserve the stories and history of Cashiers. Since then, CHS has remained committed to its mission – protecting the heritage of the entire Cashiers Valley through stewardship, advocacy, and education.
Over the years, CHS has benefited from exceptional leadership from its board, a dedicated staff, enthusiastic community members, and countless volunteers who help keep our shared history alive. It truly takes a village to sustain this work, and community support continues to be at the heart of the organization’s success.
Lauren Carmichael, Marketing and Events Director for CHS, is especially excited about a new initiative: Young Preservationists.
This growing effort brings together young professionals and community members in a relaxed, social setting where they can learn more about the Cashiers Historical Society – and each other. If you enjoy connecting with people who care about the region as much as you do, these gatherings may be just the place for you.

2025 Bluegrass, Bourbon, and Beyond at The Orchard
The first Young Preservationists event, Bluegrass, Bourbon, and Beyond, held this past August at The Orchard, was a tremendous success. Guests sipped bourbon, enjoyed live music, learned a bit of bourbon history, played classic lawn games like cornhole and giant Jenga, and had the chance to engage directly with CHS staff. The event was designed to bring together a younger generation, build community, and deepen connections with CHS. It was one of those nights where everything simply clicked – great music, meaningful connections, and plenty of fun.
Looking ahead, spring will introduce a social hour on the CHS campus, giving everyone a chance to mingle and explore the historic buildings and beautiful grounds. And when summer arrives, CHS will welcome everyone back for another round of Bluegrass, Bourbon, and Beyond.
CHS also has plans to launch a Young Preservationist Oyster Roast – a new tradition set to debut in winter 2027. It will offer a fresh, fun way for young preservationists to gather during the colder months and celebrate the heritage that brings this community together.
So why not join your neighbors and be part of this exciting new way to celebrate, protect, and preserve our shared heritage? To learn more, just reach out to the Cashiers Historical Society at (828) 743-7710.
