The national conversation around childcare has reached a critical point. News reports highlight that in 41 states, the cost of child care exceeds the average mortgage payment. This astronomical expense is directly impacting the U.S. labor force, where participation by women with children under five has declined in recent years, demonstrating that a lack of affordable care is a significant barrier to economic stability.

The Literacy & Learning Center recognizes the profound challenge families in our community face. While universal childcare remains a national goal, TL&LC has always removed these financial barriers to education and skill-building for both children and adults – and done so completely free of charge.

This is a vital investment in our local workforce. For our youngest residents, our thriving second-year Pre-K program provides essential school readiness. By using proven curricula like Handwriting Without Tears, students master foundational skills, such as a proper crayon grip and left-to-right movement, setting them on a path to academic success. This critical, free early education allows parents to maintain employment and advance their careers, knowing their children are receiving high-quality preparation.

Furthermore, we support adults seeking better employment and community integration. Our English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, which recently returned to their highly effective in-person format, empower students to gain better job opportunities and confidently manage daily life. For parents, improving English literacy is crucial for supporting their children’s education and communicating effectively with schools. TL&LC now offers $25 gift card for every five classes attended.

Every free class from tutoring to Pre-K to ESL is a direct act of community investment. TL&LC’s mission is to advance literacy and promote lifelong learning, which translates directly to a stronger, more informed, and more stable Macon County workforce. By offering education free of charge, we are ensuring that financial hardship is never a roadblock to success.
