Now entering its 45th season, the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival returns with a summer program that continues to define chamber music on the Plateau.

The regular season runs from July 5 through August 9, bringing a full slate of concerts to Highlands and Cashiers under the artistic direction of pianist William Ransom, whose steady leadership has shaped the festival’s thoughtful balance of tradition and forward momentum.

Before the regular season begins, two June events offer a clear introduction to what the summer holds – one intimate, one ceremonial – each reinforcing the festival’s commitment to close listening and meaningful connection.

The first is the Mountain Music Soirée, held on Sunday, June 21.

Hosted at the home of longtime Festival supporter Mary Thompson, the evening returns chamber music to its origins: a private setting, a small audience, and music experienced at close range. Pianist William Ransom, the festival’s artistic director, joins violinist David Coucheron for an evening that pairs virtuoso performance with gracious Southern hospitality. The 6:00 P.M. concert precedes a gourmet dinner; all set against one of the area’s most spectacular mountain views.

One week later, on June 28, the festival shifts to grand celebration mode with its 45th Anniversary Opening Gala at the Highlands Performing Arts Center’s Martin Lipscomb Theatre. The Zukerman Trio takes the stage at 5:00 P.M., bringing the kind of international artistry that has kept the festival at the forefront of chamber music for nearly five decades. While the specific repertoire will be announced closer to the performance, the trio’s presence alone signals the caliber of musicianship audiences can expect throughout the season. A champagne reception following the concert provides the perfect opportunity to toast both the evening’s performance and the festival’s 45-year legacy.

Once underway, the festival follows a consistent rhythm across the Plateau. Highlands concerts will be held on Saturdays and Mondays at the Highlands Performing Arts Center – the Martin-Lipscomb Theatre, located at 507 Chestnut Street. In Cashiers, performances take place on Sundays and Tuesdays at the Village Green Commons – Lewis Hall, at 160 Frank Allen Road. The alternating schedule allows audiences in both communities to easily build concerts into their summer routines, whether as a weekend anchor or a midweek pause.

Both June events require advance reservations, available online after March 15 or by calling (828) 526-9060. The Mountain Music Soirée is $200 per person; Opening Gala tickets are $80 for concert only or $125 for concert and champagne reception.
