Mark your calendar and come hungry because one of the Plateau’s most beloved traditions is back: the Scaly Mountain Woman’s Club Pancake Breakfasts. If you’ve ever been, you already know, this isn’t just breakfast, it’s a full-on community event where the pancakes are hot, the coffee never runs dry, and you’re guaranteed to leave smiling.
Here’s when to show up: June 13, July 11, August 8, September 12, and October 10, from 8:00 to 10:30 A.M. Head over to the Scaly Mountain Community Center (the Old Schoolhouse at 41 Buck Knob Road) and settle in for a plate piled high with fluffy pancakes, plain or loaded with fresh blueberries, plus sausage, orange juice, and all the coffee you can handle. It’s just $8 for adults, $6 for kids, and families are capped at $30, so bring the whole crew.
Now, about those blueberries – they’re the real deal. Locally-grown, freshly-picked, and generously donated by a nearby farm, they’re as fresh as it gets and worth the trip all on their own.
But what really makes these breakfasts special is what they support. Every plate helps fund scholarships for local students, 16 of them, in fact, working toward their college dreams. Freshmen and sophomores receive $750 per semester, while juniors and seniors get $1,000, adding up to as much as $7,000 over the course of their education. And it’s not just for recent grads; these scholarships are open to adult learners too, helping neighbors of all ages take the next step.
The impact doesn’t stop there. Proceeds also help maintain and improve the community center, support the Scaly/Sky Valley Fire Department, the Scaly Mountain Historical Society, and other local organizations that keep this community strong and connected. The club even partners with the Scaly Mountain Community Association to publish a monthly newsletter, keeping everyone in the loop on what’s happening around town.
So, whether you come for the pancakes, the blueberries, or the friendly faces, one thing’s certain – you’ll be glad you showed up.
