pancakes and all the fixens

Eat like a local. Isn’t that always the best advice when looking for a meal to enjoy, and isn’t it even better if it’s freshly prepared, lovingly served, and the proceeds benefit the community? We know just the place to enjoy such a breakfast. Join the Scaly Mountain Women’s Club for their eagerly anticipated pancake breakfasts on July 11, August 8, and September 19 from 8:00 to 10:30 A.M. at the Scaly Mountain Community Center at 41 Buck Knob Road.

Bring the family, come hungry, and enjoy a plate piled high with fluffy pancakes — plain or loaded with fresh blueberries — plus sausage, orange juice, and all the coffee you can handle. It’s just $8 for adults, $6 for kids, and families are capped at $30, so bring the whole crew.

What really makes these breakfasts special is what they support. Every plate helps fund scholarships for local students –16 of them, in fact – working toward their college dreams. Freshmen and sophomores receive $750 per semester, while juniors and seniors get $1,000, adding up to as much as $7,000 over the course of their education.

These scholarships aren’t just for recent high school graduates. They’re available to adult learners as well, giving people of all ages the opportunity to pursue their educational goals. The program has been supporting our community for decades, and some of the very first scholarship recipients are now nearing retirement age and getting ready to collect Social Security. How’s that for lasting impact?

The impact doesn’t stop there. Proceeds also help maintain and improve the community center, support the Scaly/Sky Valley Fire Department, the Scaly Mountain Historical Society, and other local organizations that keep this community strong and connected. The club partners with the Scaly Mountain Community Association to publish a monthly newsletter, keeping everyone in the loop on what’s happening around town and fostering community spirit.

In addition to these fundraisers, SMWC recently hosted their first annual Arts & Craft Show, which was a huge success, and they’re eagerly looking forward to next year’s show.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the evening of August 13, when they team up with the Rotary Club of Highlands for a fun‑filled Bingo night. Proceeds from the evening will support their many worthwhile projects.

Supporting the community is at the heart of what SMWC does. Their commitment is shared by family members, friends, and neighbors, who can often be found volunteering right alongside them.
