Libraries have long been places to borrow books, but in Highlands and Cashiers they’re equally places to discover new interests, learn a skill, meet neighbors, or enjoy an afternoon in good company.
At Hudson Library in Highlands, September brings imagination and hands-on creativity for young visitors. The Kids Zone series combines science, technology, engineering, art, and math with projects designed to spark curiosity.
On September 3, children will explore the wonders of space before switching gears a week later to create colorful mosaics using an unexpected artistic medium: lasagna noodles. There will be no Kids Zone on September 17, when the library closes early for a special evening fundraiser hosted by the Hudson Library Foundation in support of its Capital Campaign.
Weekly Story Time continues Thursdays at 10:40 A.M., welcoming little readers and their caregivers for stories, songs, and early literacy fun.
Just a few miles away, the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library offers programs for nearly every age and interest.
Wednesday mornings begin with Story Time at 10:30 A.M., introducing children to books through stories, music, and interactive activities. At the same time, the Knitters Group gathers from 10:00 A.M. until noon, welcoming newcomers and experienced knitters alike.
Yoga meets every Monday at 5:00 P.M., offering an opportunity to stretch, breathe, and unwind.

Movie lovers can settle in every Thursday at 3:00 P.M. for the library’s regular film series, with titles announced on an ongoing schedule.
Music fills the library during the Community Jam, held on the second and fourth Sundays at 2:00 P.M. Local musicians share tunes in an informal setting that’s as enjoyable for listeners as the performers.
Children can also look forward to Tuesdays at 3:45 P.M., when the library alternates among arts and crafts, LEGO Club, board games, and other hands-on activities.
Together, Hudson Library and the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library show that today’s libraries are far more than quiet places lined with shelves. They are gathering places where curiosity is encouraged, friendships are formed, and lifelong learning happens one story, class, game, and conversation at a time.
