Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Updates Rotary Club of Highlands on Significant Achievements

Highlands -Cashiers Hospital CEO Tom Neal recently updated the Rotary Club of Highlands on achievements made by the Hospital:
• Designation as the #1 for Emergency Room Patient Experience HCA
• Attained accreditation for Joint Commission as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital in December 2023
• Capital investment of $5million from HCA to replace MRI and CT scanner. This is on top of $15 million invested since HCA acquired Highlands Cashiers Hospital.
• Winning entry in HCA’s companywide food sculpture competition Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrow – a huge canned food sculpture of a Teddy Bear that was awarded $35,000 – which in turn the Hospital donated to The International Friendship Center’s • • • Food Pantry in Highlands and Fishes and Loaves Food Pantry in Cashiers and Jackson County.
• A branch of the Boys and Girls Club of the Plateau will soon be located at the Hospital’s campus.
• General Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery are now provided at Highlands Cashiers Hospital.
Neal proudly introduced two Hospital staff members: Hollis Whitehead, the Director of Hospital & Clinical Operations and James Wright, MD, Emergency Medicine Specialist.
Whitehead movingly described a day in the life of a Highlands-Cashiers Hospital Nurse.
Dr. Wright described the warning signals of a stroke: BEFAST:
Balance problems
Eye or vision problems
Facial droop
Arm weakness
Speech difficulties
Time is of the essence! Wright urged listeners to call 911 if any of these symptoms occur.
Wright also explained that the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital’s designation as a Stroke Ready Hospital means that all of the national best practices are in place to treat a stoke patient as required by the Joint Commission that accredits health care organizations.
