July on the Highlands–Cashiers plateau feels tailor‑made for picnics. Warm afternoons, cool breezes, and long stretches of daylight invite you to linger. Here, a picnic isn’t just a meal. It’s a way of settling into the season and letting the mountains set the pace.

Some of the region’s most beautiful picnic spots are the ones where the landscape does the hosting. In Highlands, Kelsey‑Hutchinson Founders Park remains a favorite in‑town option. During the live concert series Saturdays on Pine, blankets spread across the grass, music drifts through the trees, and summer unfolds in real time (see page 46).

A quieter gem sits a few minutes away at Lindwood Lake, part of the Highlands Biological Station. With walking trails, a shaded pavilion, and peaceful water views, it’s ideal for those who prefer nature’s soundtrack. For something more dramatic, Whiteside Mountain offers a striking backdrop. The summit is better suited for a post‑hike snack than a full spread, but the trailhead area provides a scenic place to pause.

For those who love water views, Lake Glenville is hard to beat. The Pine Creek and Mill Creek recreation areas offer picnic spaces and shoreline access, with breezes that make long afternoons feel effortless.

In Cashiers, The Village Green provides shaded lawns, walking paths, and room for families to spread out. On Groovin’ on the Green evenings (see page 70), a simple picnic becomes a community gathering, with music, neighbors, and the feeling of summer in the air.

Provisions are half the fun, and the plateau offers no shortage of places to gather something delicious. In Highlands, The Kitchen CarryAway is a go‑to for elevated grab‑and‑go meals. Rosewood Market offers fresh sandwiches, salads, and baked goods. One Wicker Cheese Co. brings artisanal cheeses and accompaniments perfect for a picnic board. Dusty’s Superette remains a reliable stop for classic provisions, and Bodega by The Bull adds ready‑to‑enjoy options.

For wine and charcuterie, Highlands Wine Shoppe offers thoughtful selections, and High Country Wine & Provisions provides pairings that travel beautifully.

In Cashiers, Buck’s Coffee Café offers pastries, quiche, and light lunches. The Village Pantry provides fresh, unfussy fare for packing a basket. Duck Hawk Provisions adds another welcome option with a well‑stocked grab‑and‑go case. Grey Fox Grocery offers prepared meals that travel well and make planning effortless.

For those heading toward Lake Toxaway, Moondance Wine Bar offers wine and items that make assembling a basket easy. The Dilly Deli provides prepared foods that travel well for an afternoon by the water. Historic Toxaway Market offers wine and the essentials needed to pull together a simple, well‑rounded spread before settling in lakeside.

July picnics on the plateau offer a simple pleasure. They’re timeless, unhurried, and tied to place.
