Drink and Let Drink

Written By: Curt Christiansen | Issue: 2016/12 - December
I have been informed many times in my wine career that I am not drinking the right (best) wines.
The truth is that I cut my teeth on California wine and that’s all I drank for almost a decade. As I have been a wine professional for 25 years now, I drink and/or appreciate wines from all over the globe. Still, whenever I enjoy a New World wine at a trade show, someone will unselfishly take time to try to reeducate with their most informed views on which style of wines I should enjoy. The lecture tends to be somewhat boring and technical so I thought I’d convey the lesson using cars instead of wine.
Informed: You know, I just can’t drive that red mustang, the color is too flashy, and who wants all that power and acceleration and handling and no car needs a convertible top. I drive a Golf Eco diesel. It runs on vegetable oil “like God intended” (They love saying that). It’s a subtle grey color with a restrained matching interior. It has balance (this is the shining star on the top of the informed wine enthusiast tree).
Me: Gee, thanks.
I think we can all agree that you drive an Eco diesel for one reason and a red sport convertible for a completely different reason. If you owned both you’d use them both. If you want to start a snooze fest, tell someone why one is the best.
So let’s all get over ourselves and drink and let drink.
Drink well, Curt
