One Home Saves Two

Foster families help the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society save more animals by opening their homes to pets in need. One foster home creates space for one more rescue.

Our shelter doesn’t end at 200 Gable Drive. In fact, that’s just the beginning.

For an abandoned, abused, neglected, or homeless animal, the journey to a better life begins at the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society. A safe refuge. A warm bed. A full bowl. Compassionate care. A second chance.

Today, more than 100 dogs and cats are entrusted to our care. But what if we could save 110? Or 120? Or even more?

We can.

Through our Foster Program, our shelter extends into the community. Every time a foster family opens their home to a CHHS shelter pet, space becomes available for us to rescue another animal in need.

Fostering can be especially helpful for puppies and kittens who need time to grow, a mother caring for a litter, an animal recovering from a medical procedure, or a shelter pet who simply needs a quieter place for a while.

A foster home gives us something else that can be invaluable. Most of the animals who arrive at CHHS were found as strays. We don’t know where they lived before, what their lives were like, or much about the history we would love to share with potential adopters.

A foster home helps us fill in some of those blanks. House-trained? Good with other pets? A champion couch potato? A four-legged alarm clock at 6:00 A.M.? The things a foster family discovers can help us learn who that animal really is outside the shelter and ultimately help us find the right forever family.

Perhaps you have thought about fostering but hesitated because you weren’t ready for a long-term commitment. That is one of the most common misconceptions about fostering.

Not everyone can give a shelter pet forever. Sometimes a few weeks can change forever.

We’ll provide the food, supplies, medications, veterinary care, and support. You provide the temporary home, the love, and the extra space that allows us to save one more life.

One foster home. One open space at CHHS. Two lives saved.
