Who is wintering in these woods?
That’s the question we're asking as we approach the 26th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count. This global event invites people to spend time in their favorite places watching & counting birds to help scientists better understand how birds across the world are doing.
“Early Bird Strolls” on Friday & Saturday morning.
"Bird's the Word!" on Saturday afternoon.
Birders of all skill levels can meet at our North Campus (111 Lower Lake Road) Binoculars will be provided.
Programs are weather dependent.
Annually, birds from all over the country travel to North Carolina during their migration.
On Friday, February 17 and Monday, February 20 participate in a count of our bird population. Come to Cashiers Historical Society either day from 11 – 2 and watch and listen for 15 minutes, count all the birds you see or hear.
After, join all for a cup of hot chocolate at the Dowden Pavilion or Col. John’s Cabin. Information will be downloaded to Cornell University.

Known as the “Cheers” of Bookstores, the Bookworm in Highlands is affiliated with the Hudson Library: all books are donated; all staff are volunteers; and all funds go to help support the library. More than a retail store, we are a community service offering carefully sorted donated books to provide the best quality at a used bookstore price.

In partnership with the Highlands United Methodist Church and the MANNA FoodBank, the Highlands Food Pantry provides food assistance to residents of Highlands and the surrounding communities.
If you are experiencing financial hardship and are food-insecure, we strongly encourage you to visit the Highlands Food Pantry.
