Carol Misner
This August, many of them are coming to Acorns. They bring with them botanical paintings, forgotten works of art with mysterious pasts, artisanal honey, heirloom-worthy pewter, handcrafted candles, and timeless jewelry. Better still, they bring the people behind them.
The month opens August 1 with Highlands favorite Carol Misner, whose botanical paintings are instantly recognizable for their ethereal beauty. Using delicate layers of acrylic, Misner transforms flowers, leaves and native flora into monochromatic studies that seem to glow from within.
Drawn from both the Plateau and her travels, her paintings have a way of making familiar plants look as though you’ve never really seen them before. It’s a reminder that nature often rewards those willing to pause and truly look.

Acorns welcomes one of its most distinctive guests August 7 through 9: Dead Artists Gallery. Rather than showcasing contemporary artists, the gallery specializes in antique and vintage paintings rescued from estate sales, attics and forgotten corners before being thoughtfully curated for a new generation of collectors.
Landscapes, portraits, still lifes and unexpected treasures each arrive with one thing no contemporary work can offer – a past. Who painted them? Where have they hung? Whose lives have they witnessed? Owning one means becoming the next steward in its story.
On August 15, artistry becomes something to taste when Killer Bees Honey hosts a pop-up tasting featuring its Appalachian artisanal honeys. One spoonful quickly settles the notion that honey is simply honey. Each variety reflects a different landscape, a different bloom and a different season, revealing surprising flavors shaped by the forests and wildflowers surrounding the hives. It’s proof that craftsmanship sometimes begins with the landscape itself.
Not every heirloom begins as an heirloom. Match Pewter knew that from the beginning. On August 21 and 22, founder and CEO David Reiss visits Acorns to share the history behind his handcrafted, Italian-designed, lead-free pewter. Produced using centuries-old techniques, every bowl, tray and candlestick reflects the work of skilled artisans who continue traditions passed from one generation to the next.
The month saves two of its biggest draws for the final weekend. Susan Center brings Southern Bungalow’s handcrafted candles to Acorns August 28 through 30. Her candles have a way of making people ask, “What smells so good?” before they’ve even taken off their coat. Inspired by Southern landscapes and memories, they create an atmosphere every bit as memorable as their fragrances.

That same weekend, August 29 through 31, Acorns welcomes celebrated jewelry designer Elizabeth Locke for a personal appearance showcasing her signature collections of Venetian glass intaglios and richly textured gold settings. Drawing inspiration from the ancient world while feeling effortlessly current, her creations are the kind of jewelry that begins as a purchase and ends as a family treasure.
August belongs to people who have an eye for the beautiful. Acorns simply offers them the chance to refine it.
