Whether your child is itching for some hands-on science, you want to brush up on your tech skills, or you simply enjoy a good jam session, the Plateau’s two libraries have something for you this April.
At Hudson Library in Highlands, April belongs to the children — and to the grown-ups who happily tag along. On April 2, the Kids Zone turns festive with an Easter crafts program, where children can choose from several projects and leave with glitter on their sleeves and something handmade in their hands. A week later, on April 9, librarian Jessica Pollock hosts the second “Mad Science with Jessica” of the year. This recurring favorite is exactly what it sounds like: seven experiments, plenty of bubbling curiosity, and kids doing most of the hands-on work themselves. It’s science class reimagined as joyful discovery.
Family Story Time continues each Thursday at 10:40 A.M., offering a steady weekly rhythm for young families — books, songs, and the small magic that happens when children gather on a carpet to listen. And while April is full, there’s a hint of what’s ahead: Community Coffee returns in May, a reminder that the library serves grown-up connection just as well as childhood wonder.
The Albert Carlton–Cashiers Community Library answers with a calendar that moves easily from practical to playful.
Mah Jongg players gather every Monday at 1:00 P.M. for friendly competition and conversation, followed by Yoga at 4:00 P.M. with Heather Gerlach (mats provided). Adult Movie afternoons roll every Thursday at 3:00 P.M., complete with free popcorn.
For children 7 and up, Tuesdays are reserved for imagination – on April 7 invites after-school creativity through STEAM-based play. On April 21, STEAM Explorers dives into coding robots, construction kits, and science experiments. April 28 brings Board Game Bonanza.
Wednesdays begin with Tech Time at 10:00 A.M., where digital navigators offer one-on-one help with smartphones, laptops, tablets, and iPads. At 10:30 A.M., PreK Storytime follows, a lively hour of books, songs, play, and creativity for the youngest readers and their caregivers. The Knitters Group meets Wednesdays from 10:00 A.M. to noon, needles clicking and conversation flowing.
Music finds its place, too. On Sunday, April 12 at 2:00 P.M, the Community Jam welcomes guitars, banjos, fiddles, harmonicas, and piano for an informal gathering of folk, country, acoustic rock, and Americana.
The library also hosts a Dementia Caregivers Support Group on April 2 and April 23 at 3:00 P.M., offering support and connection for those caring for loved ones.
In both towns, the libraries remain what they’ve always quietly been: places to learn something new, meet a neighbor, and spend an hour well.
