Crafted by Nature

Appalachian traditions are alive and well at the Highlands and Cashiers farmers markets, where artisans like Rebecca Queen join local growers for the season’s final markets.

Folks in the Appalachians have always found ways to be both self-reliant and community-focused.

When wood-chopping required a sawyer and a chopper, two was enough. When a coverlet needed piecing and stitching, there’d be a quilting bee. When help was needed for a fifth grader’s arithmetic homework, well, today, that’d require a dang village.

But we’ve gotten away from helping each other, from practicing energy efficiency, and from using every drop of a proper resource (all the fat of a hog, for instance).
Now there’s a movement back to old-timey mountain practices.

One leader of that revival is seventh-generation Rebecca Queen, a queen of making soap for cleansing skin, hair, and whatever cleanser a body requires.

Now you can meet the Cullowhee Queen of Sustainability along with her proper, healthy, earthiness, hand-crafted, cold-processed soap. No chemicals, no junk, no ingredients you can’t pronounce. You only get everything that Mother Nature provides and now you can have it, easily, in the palm of your hand.

The October markets will provide whatever Mother Nature and weather allow. That will likely include the usual delicious fall roots, mountain potatoes, yams, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, turnips, and radishes; winter squashes and pumpkins galore; cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower; onions, leeks, and garlic. There might be a few summer stragglers if a freeze hasn’t gotten to them.

Grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, chickens, turkeys, and fresh eggs are on tap. Look for flowers, honey, microgreens, bakery, jams, dairy, and soap.

Queen will be at the following markets:

Cashiers, Locally Grown on the Green, open 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21, and 28; 160 Frank Allen Road in Cashiers.
Highlands Farmers Market at Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park on Pine Street in Highlands: Saturdays, 8:00 A.M. to 12:30 P.M.

So grab the scrumptious food and products like the goodies you’ve consumed all season. Don’t miss the last four markets of October. Then look forward to spring vegetables, meats, and more.

Don Deal of the Highlands Market adds, “We (Highlands Farmers Market) have two additional dates at the Highlands Rec Park: one market, November 21, a week before Thanksgiving; and a second, the week after the Christmas Parade, December 12.”
