Nobody told the libraries to slow down this summer. Between Hudson Library in Highlands and Albert Carlton–Cashiers Community Library, July’s calendar reads less like a programming schedule and more like a dare — how much can two mountain libraries pack into 31 days?

At Hudson, the Summer Reading Program rolls through August 31 under the theme “Unearth a Story,” with dinosaurs, fossils, and archaeology getting top billing. Kids ages 0–17 log 20 minutes of daily reading to earn prizes and raffle entries; adults have their own Summer Reading Bingo with comparable stakes. Every seven days you hit your reading goal, you collect a prize and a raffle ticket — bigger draws happen at program’s end.

July’s focus is STEAM, and Hudson’s approach is refreshingly hands‑on. Mad Science with Jessica on July 2 puts kids in charge of the experiments first, explanations second — the right order. The Franklin Gem & Mineral Society visits July 9, Mainspring Conservation Trust comes July 16, and Professor Whizzpop arrives July 17 at 3:30 P.M. with a summer‑reading magic show that sounds like the best possible way to spend a Friday afternoon. July 23 goes delightfully oversized with a live‑action giant Sorry! tournament, and July 30 brings a Famous Artists craft program pairing hands‑on projects with brief artist bios — context optional, creativity required. On the author front, novelist Jill McCorkle headlines Books & Bites on July 1 at 12:00 P.M., and Nancy Reeder discusses her new book Unsheltered on July 15.

Down in Cashiers, Albert Carlton Library hits its stride mid‑month. A Diamond Painting Workshop on July 10 at 1:00 P.M. kicks things off — the stated goal is to “create and relax,” which sounds like a reasonable prescription for mid‑summer. Community Jam sessions on July 12 and July 26 at 2:00 P.M. welcome anyone who wants to play or simply listen. Friends of Panthertown arrive July 16 at 10:30 A.M. with a Leave No Trace program covering the seven principles of enjoying the outdoors responsibly — timely, given how beloved and busy Panthertown Valley has become.

The week of July 15–17 is the Cashiers Library at full throttle. On July 15, the Highlands‑Cashiers Chamber Music Festival brings its free Family Concert at 3:00 P.M. “Musical Animals” features an outstanding ensemble playing Vaughan‑Williams, Sibelius, and Saint‑Saëns, with ice cream from Kilwins on the side. Pre‑register by calling the library. July 17 unleashes the Mini Carnival from 1:00–3:00 P.M.: bingo, games, prizes, popcorn, and free books.

Both libraries. All of July. Bring the whole family.
