October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor those touched by breast cancer, celebrate survivors, remember those we have lost, and share what we have learned along the way.
This year, the community is invited to gather for a Pink Partini, an evening centered around a simple but powerful truth: We don’t know what we don’t know.
A breast cancer diagnosis often comes with countless questions. What should you expect during treatment? What happens afterward? How do you cope with side effects, recovery, work, relationships, and everyday life? While medical teams provide critical guidance, valuable insights also come from people who have walked the path.
The Pink Partini was created to make space for those conversations.
Patients, survivors, spouses, caregivers, family members, and loved ones are invited to share experiences, questions, knowledge, and encouragement. Whether newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, years into survivorship, or supporting someone you love, every perspective may help someone else navigate the journey.
For organizer and breast cancer survivor Mary Adair Trumbly, the event carries deeply personal meaning.
“I am one year cancer-free, and along the way I learned something I wish I had known from the beginning: we don’t know what we don’t know,” she says. “I learned the hard way that radiation can cause scar tissue. No one told me. Would I still have chosen radiation? Absolutely. But knowing what I know now, I would have followed MD Anderson’s recommendation to begin stretching before and during radiation. It wouldn’t have prevented the scar tissue, but it could have helped lessen the pain afterward.
“That’s why the Pink Partini is so important to me. We all have something to learn, and we all have something to share.”
There is no formal agenda. Instead, the gathering offers a welcoming space where conversations happen naturally, resources are shared, and people discover they are not alone.
Representatives from Highlands Counseling Center will be available with support and counseling resources. Highlands-Cashiers Hospital will also offer walk-in mammograms October 7 and 21 from 2:00 to 5:30 P.M.
The Pink Partini will be held Wednesday, October 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Town Hall Restaurant, 474 Main Street in Highlands. Guests can enjoy light bites, a cash bar featuring pink margaritas, pink martinis, rosé, and mocktails.
