Ready! Set! Shove! It’s time to have a go at the Outhouse Races at Sapphire Valley Ski Resort on February 7.
What do participants say about the competition? Here’s what Johnny Loo hollered at his last year’s run, “I cut loose the caboose so fast, viewers were totally flushed.”
This year’s themed teams hope to top Johnny’s toilet triumphs. If you’re part of the renowned outhouse event, you already know how to battle for the 2026 latrine title. If you want to know more, just call (828) 743-7663. BTW, you can rent-a-potty for the race if you don’t want to build your own.
Are you familiar with the Outhouse Race Legend?
If not, here’s the scoop. Indoor plumbing is ancient, older than dirt.
So when did laying a brick inside the house become common? Believe it or not, 2500 B.C.
In the early years of the 20th Century, when more pristine plumbing took over, outhouses became prohibited. The story goes that outraged rural residents uncoupled their privies, rolled them down the road, steering them headfirst, straight for Town Hall.
Wisely, the mayor caved and agreed that every winter, if the folk kept privies in storage, out-of-sight for the year, they could ski their outhouses right down Main in an annual race. As long as they returned them to their back-forty.
Now, if you believe that story, I’m gonna release the kraken right in your Porcelain Palace. Here’s what is true: the 2500 B.C. inside scoop, that’s true – and the Outhouse Race at Sapphire Valley Ski Resort is absolutely happening.
So, mark February 7 on your calendar to cheer-on the pilot, the paper-holder, and the pusher of your favorite Privy Express.
