Lessons From the Harvest

The harvest has always been a time to take stock of what has grown. Our health follows the same pattern, shaped by the simple daily habits that ultimately determine how we feel and function.

October on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau makes the idea of harvest impossible to ignore. Gardens are winding down, leaves are changing, and the work of spring and summer has produced its result.

In the old seasonal tradition of Mabon, this was a time to recognize the harvest and take stock of what had been gathered before winter. There is a pretty good lesson in that for our health.

We often think about health in terms of immediate results. Start exercising. Change our diet. Get more sleep. Lose ten pounds. Feel better.

But health works much more like a garden. What we experience today is often the harvest of hundreds of small choices made over the preceding months and years. How we move. What we eat. How we sleep. How we manage stress. Whether we spend our days sitting indoors or occasionally step outside and let our bodies do what they were designed to do.

That can sound intimidating, but I think it is actually encouraging. Because sowing works both ways. A thirty-minute walk today probably will not transform your health tomorrow. Neither will one good meal, an earlier bedtime, or ten minutes spent quietly outside.

But keep planting those seeds. Strength becomes easier to maintain. Energy improves. Sleep gets better. Mobility lasts longer. The body becomes more capable and resilient.

As we move through October, take a moment to look at your own harvest. What is working well? What could use a little attention?

Then choose one thing worth planting for next year. A daily walk. Two strength workouts each week. Better breakfasts. More sleep. More time outside. Nothing dramatic. Just something you can keep doing.

Because when it comes to our health, the old lesson still holds.

We reap what we sow.
