Dr. Kate Shattenkirk
Have you ever wanted to turn a peony into a hydrangea? To take a flower’s petals and try to turn them into an entirely different bloom?
Probably not. We recognize the beauty and uniqueness of every flower. We may have our favorites, but the beauty of one does not diminish the beauty of another.
A camellia is perfect by nature. So the right gardener will care for it, making sure it remains the freshest, healthiest version of a camellia – not try to turn it into an orchid. The same is true of quality aesthetic medicine: a physician’s role is not to change your nature, but to help it unfold.
That is precisely the approach taken by Dr. Kate Shattenkirk, owner of Dr. Kate’s Medical Aesthetics. A seasoned family physician, she has combined three decades of medical experience with a field she fell in love with many years ago.
Dr. Kate first came to North Carolina through the National Health Service Corps, practicing family medicine in rural and underserved communities. Her desire to help others was, quite literally, passed down through her bloodline.
Of Irish descent, Dr. Kate carries the legacy of her great-grandmother, Delia, and grandmother, Honora, who served their community in Ireland as midwives and undertakers, “caring especially for poor families and people physicians often could not or would not reach,” Dr. Kate recalled.
Dr. Kate’s mother and sister became nurses in America, her niece became a nurse-midwife, and Dr. Kate became a physician.
“I am very proud of that lineage and the influence those women had on the physician I became,” she shared.
Dr. Kate always knew that medicine was her calling – and that meant never stopping her education.
After becoming interested in laser medicine, her work in the field grew considerably. She eventually worked with Candela, training and certifying physicians and other medical professionals in laser procedures and lecturing around the world.
“I discovered a field that combined medicine with technology, artistry and creativity,” she explained.
Teaching taught Dr. Kate not only how to communicate, but how to listen. “You have to understand something well enough to explain it clearly,” she said. “Some of the most important skills in medicine are compassion, active listening and the ability to make complicated information understandable. Teaching made me better at all three.”
For Dr. Kate, aesthetic medicine has never been primarily about conventional beauty. Much of her earlier laser work involved treating rosacea, scars, port-wine stains, hemangiomas and other visible conditions that caused people to feel deeply self-conscious.
“Seeing someone regain confidence after treating something that had troubled them for years was tremendously rewarding,” she emphasized. “My approach favors natural results – helping someone look rested, refreshed and like the best version of themselves rather than creating an obvious or artificial change.”
That is why Dr. Kate’s Medical Aesthetics is not about a cookie-cutter approach. It is about medical expertise and current, evidence-based technology delivered with compassion – and, above all, a tailored approach.
“Aesthetic concerns can be deeply personal, and patients should be able to speak openly without feeling judged, rushed or pressured,” Dr. Kate emphasized. “My responsibility as their physician is to listen, explain what I genuinely believe will or won’t help, and develop an individualized plan.”
For Dr. Kate, her patients’ best interests always come first. “The best compliment is when someone says, ‘You look great,’ but can’t identify why. The goal isn’t for someone to notice the procedure – it is for them to notice the person.”
Aesthetic medicine is not a magic wand. Under the guidance of a professional, it is a system that delivers results over time – a long-term investment in the health and quality of your skin.
At Dr. Kate’s Medical Aesthetics, a unique camellia will never be turned into another flower. Instead, it can remain healthy, fresh and uniquely beautiful.
