October arrives on the Plateau with color in the trees and something happening at the library nearly every day of the week, from mad scientists and glow-in-the-dark games to felted birds and an FBI agent turned novelist.
At Hudson Library in Highlands, the month opens with the Kids Zone favorite Mad Science with Jessica on October 1. On October 8, kids get artsy with a program inspired by the Renaissance art of fresco, creating projects of their own. Then, on October 15, children are invited to bring friends and family for a live version of the classic board game Clue. Who can solve the mystery first?
The month’s Kids Zone finale comes October 22 with a Glow in the Dark Carnival, featuring an assortment of carnival games that glow in the dark, along with small prizes. Family Storytime keeps its regular Thursday morning spot at 10:40 A.M. throughout the month.
Grown-ups have plenty to look forward to as well. On October 7, Hudson hosts Books & Bites with author Martha Novak, who will discuss her new book, Night Frost Lane. October 16 brings the final Community Coffee of 2026, while Tech Time continues every Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. to noon. And there’s always something new on the shelves, with the library continually adding new items for children and adults.
A few miles down the mountain, the Albert Carlton-Cashiers Community Library has its own lineup of October diversions. Crafters should mark October 7 at 3:00 P.M. for a Needle Felting Workshop, with a plump little felted bird as the featured project. Supplies are limited, so call (828) 743-0215 to reserve a spot.
On October 14 from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M., retired FBI agent-turned-novelist Dana Ridenour visits the library for a signing of her latest book, All the Hidden Pieces.
Kids get their turn on October 20 at 3:45 P.M. with a Foil Arts and Crafts Activity, transforming ordinary sheets of foil into colorful creations.
The library’s familiar weekly rhythm continues alongside the special events. Story Time and the Knitters Group meet Wednesday mornings, Yoga is offered Mondays at 5:00 P.M., and Mahjong players gather Mondays at 1:00 P.M. Between the two libraries, there’s hardly an afternoon on the Plateau this October without a reason to stop in, for a story, a craft, a mystery, or just the company.
